How to install Software Updates on your Mac. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left hand corner and then select the System Preferences menu option. The System Preferences window should now open as shown in the image below. In this window, click on the Software Update icon as shown by the blue arrow above.
From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You'll see the macOS name, such as macOS Mojave, followed by its version number. If some product or feature requires you to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.
